To stop Google Chrome from constantly reloading or refreshing tabs, follow these quick solutions based on the cause:
1. Turn Off Memory Saver (Most Common)
- Go to
chrome://settings/performance in your address bar.
- Toggle off Memory Saver.
- Alternatively, keep Memory Saver on and add specific websites you don't want to reload to the Always keep these sites active exception list.
2. Disable Problematic Extensions
Third-party extension (especially ad blockers or refresh scripts like Ghostery) can force continuous page reloads.
- Type
chrome://extensions in your address bar.
- Toggle off all active extensions.
- Turn them back on one by one to find the culprit, then update, disable, or remove it.
3. Clear Cache and Cookies
Corrupted temporary data can trigger erratic page behavior.
- Go to
chrome://settings/clearBrowserData.
- Set the Time range to All time.
- Check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then click Clear data.
4. Turn Off Background Sync (Mobile)
If you are using Chrome on a phone or tablet, background website updates can force refreshes:
- Tap the three dots menu > Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security > Site settings > Background sync.
- Toggle off Allow background sync for affected sites.
If the issue persists, restore Chrome to its default state without deleting your bookmarks or saved passwords:
- Go to
chrome://settings/reset.
- Click Restore settings to their original defaults and confirm with Reset settings.
