An email someone sent me was rejected saying it was not authenticated. What does that mean and how can it be resolved?

Why unauthenticated emails are blocked:

Think of regular email like standard physical mail (snail mail). Anyone can drop an envelope in a mailbox and write any address they want in the return address corner—even yours.

Email authentication acts like a verified security wax seal or a certified stamp. It proves that the sender is actually who they claim to be and that the message came from their real email provider.

When an email is unauthenticated, it means it arrives without that verified digital seal. Because malicious scammers and spammers frequently send fraudulent emails pretending to be trusted colleagues, banks, or vendors, our email system automatically rejects unauthenticated messages to:

  • Protect against phishing and fraud: Stop tricksters from spoofing trusted senders.

  • Keep your inbox secure: Prevent malicious links and malware from reaching your computer.

  • Maintain trust: Ensure that every email delivering to your inbox is verified and legitimate.

To resolve the issue, the sender needs to contact their email administrator or provider and inquire as to why their emails were not properly authenticated.
